Taking flight

The manner in which pterosaurs took flight is a largely debated subject. Several theories include by flapping their wings, by getting a running start, or by jumping from a height. [6]

One of the most compelling theories is that pterosaurs took flight by using their four limbs to jump and launch themselves into the air. This method of take-off can be seen in vampire bats today.

Pterosaurs are found to have very strong and reinforced forelimbs, which supports the theory of an upward launch as they would have had to have strong limbs to be able to withstand the force of propelling themselves up in this manner. [6]

The evidence of webbed feet suggests a theory adjacent to the four limb launch, which is that pterosaurs may have been able to launch themselves into the air from the water. This can be seen in some ducks today, who can use their wings and webbed feet to begin flight straight from the water. [4]
